What does paving cost in Teesside?

Laid paving on Teesside in 2026 sits at £60 to £100 per square metre for block paving, £50 to £80 for slabs and flags, and £80 to £120 for a permeable build. A typical front drive of 40 square metres therefore lands somewhere between £2,400 and £4,000 in block, and a 20 square metre back patio between £1,000 and £1,600 in flags. Repairs and relaying start around £150 for a sunken patch, and edging or kerbing runs from £200.

Most of that money is under the surface. Excavation depth, the sub-base thickness, the amount of muck carted away and the drainage design set the real price, and the blocks or slabs on top are the visible part of a much larger build. Two prices for the same driveway can differ by a third simply because one digs 200mm of stone in and the other digs 100mm.

Teesside ground makes Teesside paving

The patch is not one soil. Much of Middlesbrough, Thornaby and Stockton sits on heavy boulder clay, which holds water, moves with the seasons and punishes a thin sub-base within a couple of winters. The reclaimed and made ground on the old industrial fringes near Grangetown and the Tees banks can hide anything from ash to slag, so trial digging matters before a price is fixed. The coastal strip through Redcar and Saltburn adds wind-blown sand and salt-laden air, which is why jointing choice and a properly compacted base matter more here than in a sheltered inland garden. And on the 1990s and 2000s estates at Ingleby Barwick and Wynyard, the original builder driveways are now reaching the age where the blocks are sound but the edges and joints have given up.

What a serious paving quote looks like

Paving is easy to price cheaply and expensive to put right, so the quote should describe the build, not just the finish.

• The dig stated in millimetres: excavation depth and sub-base thickness written down, with the spoil removal included rather than left as a surprise line.
• The materials named: the block or slab range, thickness, colour and jointing, so you can price the same specification twice.
• Drainage designed in: falls, channel drains or a permeable build, with surface water going somewhere legal rather than towards the house or the pavement.
• Edge restraint: haunched edgings or kerbs on every open side, because paving fails at its edges long before it fails in the middle.
• A fixed written price: square metre rate, total area, extras itemised, valid long enough for you to think about it.
• Insurance and a guarantee: public liability cover you can see, and a written workmanship guarantee with a stated length.
